"Two embroideries"
Benaki Museum/Mentis Passementerie
Opening: Tuesday 8 May 2018 at 20.00
duration:  08/05/2018 - 27/07/2018

The exhibition includes two embroideries that were completed within a period of 3 years (2013-2016) under the titles: “Embroidery I: Le merveilleux tableau d’Edvard Munch à Paris” and “Embroidery II”. They are the product of the artistic cooperation between Artist Stefanos Rokos and Architect Antiopi Pantazi.

On the occasion of  his solo exhibition The Age of Electricity, Stefanos Rokos asked Antiopi Pantazi to turn two of his paintings into their embroidered version. As Maria Bacha writes: "The final product, which brings to mind a much older tapestry tradition, has far exceeded the admittedly ambitious expectations of the parties involved: Antiopi has  managed to reinvent her medium. One can picture her embroidering and equally pondering, capturing and finally putting together a multi-level technical system, building her personal artistic code, cracking the artistic algorithm of the original work; succeeding, while using a traditional material, in rendering textures of liquid materials, such as water colours and inks, drawing, colouring, lighting in an economic and ingenious manner, and finally, achieving a visual delight that goes beyond the art of decorating — a delight that involves miles of colourful thread, thousands of spent manhours, dozens of used needles."

Mentis Passementerie is the natural and ideal place of an equal artistic collaboration that interweaves tradition with modernism, craftmanship with creativity.
